My colleagues recently told me about #GivingTuesday, a campaign launched by our friends at the UN Foundation. I visited www.givingtuesday.org and, as I learned more about this unique campaign, I realized it aligns so closely with how our firm approaches messaging and communications but also how I feel about giving personally
It’s a simple concept:
We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
Giving is an important part of my life. I get joy out of giving and helping others, but it also provides me with perspective on the person I want to be and the example I want to set for my children. As a parent, a leader in my firm, an active member of my community and a volunteer at my children’s school, I want to make sure I am finding ways to give in all those roles. That is why the idea of #GivingTuesday makes so much sense to me.
Here are some ways I’m looking forward to giving on #GivingTuesday. Again, these are small, simple steps, but when we combine our efforts, it will go a long way. I hope this will give you some ideas of how you can participate!
- Cleaning out my closets: My daughters will be participating in their schools’ winter coats, hats and mittens drive. We will take inventory of what we have and select items to donate.
- Turning Amex points into toys for children in need: Our building is hosting a toy drive for a local early childhood learning center. We are taking our company Amex points and using them to purchase toys.
- Client holiday gifts:I am responsible for making our firm’s annual giving a reality. Every year, in addition to the traditional holiday gifts firms often send to their clients, we also select a charity and make a donation on behalf of our clients. Is this an innovative idea? No, but it aligns with our goal of wanting to do good.
What I also find special about this campaign is its creative messaging and communications strategy. At Neimand Collaborative, we believe we can move forward by working ALL the angles that create impact. #GivingTuesday is working on multiple fronts, leveraging a wide range of media and communications platforms around the world to create a new tradition of generosity. That is impressive social impact marketing that I feel good supporting personally and professionally.
